What is System Data on iPhone — and how to reduce it
System Data (called “Other” in older iOS versions) is storage iOS uses for caches, logs, temporary files, downloaded voices and similar data that doesn’t belong to one app. It grows and shrinks on its own. You can nudge it down by restarting, clearing Safari data and shortening message history — but no App Store app, including cleaner apps, can clear it directly.
What’s inside System Data
- Caches from streaming, browsing and apps that iOS hasn’t attributed to a specific app.
- Logs, crash reports and temporary files from updates.
- Downloaded Siri voices, fonts, dictionaries and other system resources.
- Data waiting to sync (for example with iCloud) after a large import or restore.
Safe ways to shrink it
- Restart the iPhone. iOS clears some temporary files on reboot.
- Clear Safari data: Settings → Apps → Safari → Clear History and Website Data.
- Keep messages for less time: Settings → Apps → Messages → Keep Messages → 1 Year or 30 Days.
- Offload or reinstall heavy streaming apps that keep big caches.
- Wait a day after a big import or update — System Data often drops once indexing and syncing finish.
- As a last resort, back up and restore the iPhone. This reliably resets System Data but takes time.
Why a cleaner app can’t clear System Data
Every iOS app runs in its own sandbox and can only see what you grant it — your photo library, contacts or calendar. It cannot read or delete iOS files or other apps’ caches.
